About

North Glade 4-H Club is a community 4-H club for young people in the North Glade area near Swanton, part of the University of Maryland Extension 4-H program in Garrett County. Members learn by doing, taking on animal, engineering and other projects and showing their work at the Garrett County Fair.

What Members Do

The club runs much like a small organisation of its own. Youth officers lead the regular meetings, give reports and vote on club business, such as the club's 2026 decision to buy a new refrigerator for its club building. Many members raise market and small livestock and poultry, which means taking part in county-wide steps such as Quality Assurance training, poultry testing, livestock orientations and the Livestock Skillathon held at the fair. Members also join Extension engineering events, and the club gathers for social events like its summer picnic at the Swanton Community Center.

Fair Season

Summer centres on the Garrett County Fair in August, where members show their projects and market animals can go through the fair's livestock sale. Some members carry their projects on to the Maryland State Fair later in the summer. The club publishes a newsletter through Extension so families can keep track of deadlines.

How to Join

Enrolment in Garrett County 4-H goes through the University of Maryland Extension office at 1916 Maryland Highway, Suite A in Mountain Lake Park, and staff there can put you in touch with the North Glade club and explain what projects suit your child's age and interests.

If your family lives around Swanton and your kids love animals or building things, this is a friendly place to start.
