Oak Grove Church of the Brethren

Oak Grove Church of the Brethren is a country congregation at 6557 Sang Run Road in McHenry that describes itself as "the country church with a warm welcome." It offers Sunday school and Sunday worship for families around Deep Creek Lake, and it belongs to the West Marva District of the Church of the Brethren.

A Century on Sang Run Road

The congregation began between 1914 and 1917, when neighbours worshipped together in an old schoolhouse on the Sebold farm as an outpost of the Pine Grove congregation. In 1920–21 members acquired the deed and built their own church, donating their time and labour. A major renovation in 1994 extended the sanctuary, added Sunday school rooms, doubled the fellowship hall and kitchen, and added wheelchair ramps and accessible restrooms; during the work, services moved to the McHenry fire hall. Later years brought a paved lot, a steeple raised in 2002, a pavilion with picnic tables in 2006 and a fireplace in 2007. In 2001 the church bought ground for a new cemetery lot when more burial space was needed. Pastor Scott Rush has led the congregation since 2015.
