About

Oakland Church of Christ is an independent church of Christ congregation at 1300 Memorial Drive, Oakland. It gathers for Sunday Bible class and Sunday worship, with a further Bible class midweek, and welcomes anyone who wants to study the Bible and worship simply, following the New Testament pattern.

What the Congregation Believes

Members describe themselves as people who "hold no creed but Christ and who follow no book but the Bible." Teaching comes only from Scripture, and classes work through both the Old and New Testaments. The church teaches that salvation is a free gift from God, received through faith in Jesus, turning from sin and baptism into Christ. Worship is described as "always spirited and yet reverent." Ministers are addressed by their given names rather than titles such as "reverend."

From a Living Room to Memorial Drive

The congregation began on May 4, 1975, when nine members from Maryland and nearby West Virginia met for worship in a member's home. Within weeks they moved to the Mountain Lake Park Town Hall, where they met for about six years, hosting guest speakers from Cumberland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In 1981 the members built their own building, and they held their first service there in January 1982. Kevin Maul, who grew up in the Parkersburg area and trained at the West Virginia School of Preaching in Moundsville, became the congregation's minister in 2020.

Classes and Outreach

  • Youth Bible class for younger members
  • Adult Bible study run as an interactive class, where you are encouraged to ask questions and add your own thoughts
  • Camp WAMAVA support – members collect food and funds for this Christian children's camp in Linden, Virginia

The church says visitors will find a friendly mix of ages and backgrounds, and that it doesn't take long to get to know everyone.
