Oakland Church of the Nazarene is a congregation of the Church of the Nazarene, a Wesleyan-Holiness denomination, at 203 South 8th Street, Oakland, at the corner of Alder and Eighth streets. It gathers for Sunday worship and is open to anyone looking for a church home in town.
A Church Built by Its Founders
The congregation was organized on September 21, 1948, with 15 charter members who had been attending the Union Holiness Tabernacle on Third Street. In its first year, member Stanley Ashby bought the lot at Alder and Eighth, and the church's present building still stands on that site. Ashby served as general contractor and paid for much of the construction himself, with donations from the wider Oakland community helping to finish the job. That story of members and neighbours building together is still part of how the church sees itself today.
