About
Oakland Martial Arts Academy is a nonprofit Taekwondo school in Oakland teaching traditional Taekwondo to kids, families and adults. Since March 2025 it has trained in Suite G of Brodak's Plaza at 12743 Garrett Hwy, and it keeps classes affordable so cost isn't the thing standing between a child and the mat.
Traditional Taekwondo for the Whole Family
Classes are built around Taekwondo's five tenets: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Alongside the martial art itself, the academy's programs aim to build fitness, self-discipline, confidence, safety awareness and social skills. Students can attend as many of the weekday classes as they like, which makes it easier to fit training around school and work. What's on offer:
- Traditional Taekwondo, self-defense and fitness classes for children and adults
- Summer camps
- An after-school program for the 2026–2027 school year, with direct drop-off by school bus and early openings on early-dismissal days (preregistration required for drop-ins)
- Youth leadership opportunities, including supervised assistant-instructor roles
Twenty Years in Garrett County
The school began in 2005 as the MD School of TKD under Master Ron Durham, and Master Dmitry Ostrogorsky, who joined in 2006, later led it under its current name. Over the years it has trained behind El Canelo Restaurant and at the former National Guard Armory before opening its larger Brodak's Plaza studio, celebrated with a Garrett County Chamber ribbon cutting in July 2025. In 2026 it became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with help from its students and the local nonprofit Bridging Gaps, putting priority on kids facing financial barriers, and donations are tax deductible.
