About
Oakland Police Department is the Town of Oakland's own police department, serving the town that is the county seat of Garrett County. It works out of the town's municipal building at 15 South Third Street in downtown Oakland, the same address as Oakland Town Hall. For any emergency, always call 9-1-1. The department's main line is for non-emergency calls.
Community Policing in Oakland
The department describes its work as built on a foundation of community service. Its stated goals are to improve quality of life in town and to reduce the fear of crime through problem solving and partnerships between police and the community. The department publishes its Policies and Procedures and its Community Policing Program as documents on the town website, so you can read how it operates.
When to Call
Use the non-emergency line for things like reporting a minor incident within town limits, following up on a report, or asking an officer about a concern in your neighbourhood. Oakland's police serve the incorporated town itself. Calls from outside town limits, including most of the Deep Creek Lake area, are handled by the Garrett County Sheriff's Office or the Maryland State Police. The Town of Oakland also lists 301-334-1911 for town emergencies after hours.
If you are not sure which agency covers your address, the department's non-emergency line can point you the right way.
