About
Oakland Volunteer Fire Department is the volunteer fire company based in the firehouse at 31 South Third Street in downtown Oakland, on the same street as Oakland Town Hall. Its members answer fire and rescue calls for the town of Oakland and the surrounding area as part of Garrett County's network of volunteer fire, rescue and EMS companies.
A Volunteer Company
The department has been all volunteer since 1894 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its members and staff train throughout the year and stay on call around the clock, and donations help cover the operating budget and keep its apparatus in service. The company also holds fundraisers such as bingo nights at the firehouse, and its website lists upcoming events and raffles. If you're interested in helping out, Garrett County Fire and EMS recruits volunteers for firefighting, EMT and administrative roles, with training toward firefighter, EMT and paramedic certifications; applicants need to be 16 or older.
Before You Go
The firehouse is a working station, not a public office, so for anything other than an emergency, call ahead. In an emergency, always dial 9-1-1, which is answered by Garrett County's county-run dispatch center rather than the station itself.
If you'd like to support or join your local fire company, the non-emergency line is the place to start.
