About
Our Town Theatre is Garrett County's nonprofit community theatre, based at 121 East Center Street in downtown Oakland. It stages plays and musicals with local casts, crews and volunteers, and it's open to anyone who wants to watch a show, audition or help behind the scenes.
A Theatre Built by the Community
The theatre grew out of the work of founder Jane B. Avery, a Garrett County teacher who directed plays at Southern High School and Garrett College. She bought the Center Street building from the Garrett County Historical Society in 1997 and formed a board of directors soon after. The company took its name from Thornton Wilder's play Our Town, the subject of her master's thesis, and has revived that play on a ten-year cycle. Today it runs as a 501(c)(3) under the banner "Garrett County Onstage," with a mission to support the intellectual, cultural, artistic and social growth of the community.
The Backstage and Costume Shop
A few doors up the street at 105 East Center Street, the theatre's Backstage building houses a costume shop on its second floor. It rents costumes for all ages and a range of sizes, from store-bought pieces to vintage clothing. Bring a photo of the look you're after and the volunteers will help you put an outfit together, which is handy for Halloween, themed parties or school projects.
Ways to Get Involved
Auditions are posted on the theatre's website, and you can also support the company through volunteering, membership and fundraisers. Signing up for the newsletter is the easiest way to hear about upcoming shows and casting calls.
