Overlook Child Development Center

Overlook Child Development Center is a licensed early-learning center run by Garrett County Community Action Committee (GCCAC) at 41 High View Drive in Oakland. It is one of the agency's Head Start and Early Head Start sites, serving infants, toddlers and preschoolers from families across Garrett County.

Head Start and Early Head Start

Head Start is the federally funded early-childhood program that combines preschool learning with nutrition and health services, plus extra support for children with physical or developmental disabilities. Early Head Start extends that same approach to infants and toddlers. At GCCAC, eligibility is based on family income for children age five and younger, and Head Start care is offered at no cost to qualifying families. The Overlook center is licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education's Office of Child Care and is listed with the federal Office of Head Start as a GCCAC grantee site.

Programs for Young Families

Through the Overlook and Dennett Road centers, GCCAC offers:

• Center-based and home-based Early Head Start
• Full-time and wraparound childcare
• A lending library of books and resources for parents and children

Some childcare options outside Head Start use a sliding-scale fee, so it is worth asking which program fits your family.

Part of a County-Wide Network

The center shares its phone line with the Garrett County Judy Center, a partnership of Garrett County Public Schools and Garrett County Community Action that focuses on school readiness. The Judy Center works with families of young children and links with Title I elementary schools, including Broad Ford, Route 40, Friendsville, Grantsville and Yough Glades, so children can move from early learning into kindergarten with support already in place.

If you are not sure your family qualifies, give the center a call. Staff can explain eligibility, the documents you will need (such as photo ID and proof of income) and how to apply.
