About
Penn Alps Restaurant & Craft Shop is a restaurant and handicraft shop at 125 Casselman Road in Grantsville, at Little Crossings on the historic National Pike. It serves travelers and locals hearty country fare and sells crafts made mostly by artisans from the Tri-State area.
A Historic Stagecoach Stop
Penn Alps is housed in the last log hospitality house on the National Pike still serving travelers, sitting between a 1797 gristmill and the stone arch Casselman Bridge of 1813. Three of its six dining rooms were once part of the Little Crossings Inn stagecoach stop. Alta Schrock founded the nonprofit after returning to the Alleghenies in 1957 to create a marketing outlet for local cottage industries and a cultural center for the region's crafts, music and history.
The Restaurant
The menu reflects the German heritage of the Amish and Mennonite charter members, with a daily soup and salad bar and weekend buffets.
The Craft Shop
The largest handicraft shop in the area shares the building, which has been enlarged six times around the original log tavern. More than 2,500 craftspeople have sold their work here since 1958, following the founder's motto, "To help people help themselves." Spruce Forest Artisan Village, with its restored log cabins and working artisans, is part of the extended Penn Alps campus next door.
