Play Out Loud

Play Out Loud is an indoor play space and children's museum at 115 South Second Street in downtown Oakland, in the building many locals still know as the former Rudy's. Local owners Kaylee and Scott Livengood opened it in the summer of 2026 so Garrett County kids have a place to imagine, explore and play indoors in any season.

Themed Play Zones

The space is set up as a series of pretend-play areas built around everyday local life, so children can role-play the jobs and places they see around town. You'll find:

• A farm area with a painted farm mural and a custom farmers market stand stocked with play food and dress-up clothes, built with help from the Mountain Fresh Farmers Market and the Garrett County Farm Bureau
• A construction zone with building blocks, plus sand and digging pits
• A pretend restaurant diner and a veterinary clinic
• Sensory play, including an air table built by the Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society that sends scarves and light balls floating through tubes

Parties and Private Play

A separate party room sits apart from the play zones, with tables, crafts and games, so a birthday group has its own home base while the kids roam. Party packages are booked through the website and vary by group size, and the whole space can be rented privately for a bigger celebration.

A Growing Community Project

The Livengoods, both Southern High School graduates, moved home after their first daughter was born and were inspired by children's museums they visited on their travels. The county reports that Play Out Loud is transitioning to operate as Fostering Imagination, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on creative and educational play for children across Garrett County.

When the weather keeps everyone inside, it's an easy downtown stop to let little ones burn off energy.
