Sang Run State Park

Sang Run State Park is a historic homestead park on the Wild and Scenic Youghiogheny River at 3735 Sang Run Rd, McHenry, MD 21541, a few miles from Deep Creek Lake. It is a quiet place for history lovers, families and anglers who want an easy walk, a riverside picnic and a look at how a mountain community voted and shopped a century ago.

History You Can Walk Through

The homestead, once known as Friends Delight, dates to the early 1800s. The home site, farm and store were donated to Maryland in 2008, and the land became a state park in 2017. The restored Election House, built in 1872, is described by DNR as the only documented standing election house in Western Maryland; 25 presidential elections were held there, the last in 1972. The Historic Friends Store shows how people bought goods in the 1920s, and it served the community as a store and post office for decades. In 1914 a group of suffragists marching 110 miles through Garrett and Allegany counties stopped at Sang Run.

Trails, River and Programs

More than 2.5 miles of trails cross farm fields and pollinator meadows and pass large champion trees and a private family cemetery, so please stay on the path there. Along the Yough you can fish, picnic or just sit by the water, and a pavilion can be reserved through the Maryland Park Service reservation system. In summer and fall the park runs nature programs such as hayrides, guided hikes and Dutch oven demonstrations, supported by the Deep Creek Lake State Park volunteers who also run the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center.

Before You Go

A waterless toilet sits in the Friends Store parking lot. Whitewater paddlers use the separate Upper Yough Put-In at Sang Run listing; the river below is expert-only Class V water, so check the dam release schedule and your skills before launching. The park is managed as part of the Deep Creek Lake State Park complex.
