About
Shirer's Tin Shop is a family-run heating, cooling and sheet-metal shop at 117 E Oak St in downtown Oakland. It has served Garrett County since 1866, and today it installs and services furnaces, boilers and ductless heat pumps, does plumbing and remodeling work, and still fabricates custom sheet metal.
Heating, Cooling and Plumbing
Shirer's published services include:
- Furnace installation and service
- Boiler installation and service
- Ductless heat pumps and air conditioning
- New residential construction and remodeling
- Custom sheet metal work
The shop works with equipment from York, Ecoer, Heat Transfer Products, Lochinvar, A.O. Smith, Noritz and Mainline HVAC, covering furnaces, boilers and water heaters. Because it fabricates its own light-gauge metal, it can make custom ductwork, chimney flashing and specialty metal pieces instead of forcing a stock part to fit an older house.
More Than 150 Years in Oakland
The business began as a tinsmith's shop in 1866 and has stayed structured around friends and family ever since. In November 2025 the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and the county's Department of Business Development held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand re-opening of its renovated storefront, which now includes historical displays from the shop's long run downtown. The shop will mark its 160th year in 2026.
When the furnace quits on a cold mountain night or an old house needs a duct no catalog carries, Shirer's is a local call worth making.
