About
Southern Garrett High School is the public high school for the southern half of Garrett County, home of the Rams in red and white. It sits at 345 Oakland Drive in Oakland and serves students in grades 7 through 12, including the middle-school grades that moved into the building in 2024.
A School Since 1950
Southern Garrett opened in 1950, built as a junior-senior high school for grades 7 through 12, and it has come full circle: after Garrett County Public Schools closed the Southern Middle School building in 2024 so it could be renovated into the new Broad Ford Elementary, seventh and eighth graders began attending classes at the high school. The building has three wings, a greenhouse and a large set of shop workshops, along with a media center.
Student Life and Athletics
The Rams compete in Maryland public school athletics (MPSSAA), and the long-running rivalry with Northern Garrett High is a fixture of the local sports calendar. Students also produce a newspaper, The Acorn, and a yearbook, The Highlander, and the school runs a student store. Graduates stay connected through the Southern Garrett alumni association, which keeps its own website.
Before You Go
The school website is the place to find athletics schedules, guidance and office resources, menus and news. Families with new students should start with the main office or the guidance office.
If you're catching a game or dropping off a student, Oakland Drive is just outside downtown Oakland.
