About

The Springs Historical Society of the Casselman Valley is a nonprofit organization in Springs, Pennsylvania, founded in 1957. It sponsors the Springs Folk Festival, the Springs Farmers' Market, the Springs Museum, the Alta Schrock Nature Trail and public programs, and each year publishes the Casselman Chronicle, a historical and genealogical journal.

The society works to preserve buildings, sites, landmarks, documents and other items of historical interest, to revive pioneer arts and crafts, and to foster interest in and research into the history of the area.

The Springs Museum collects and preserves artifacts and images documenting the history of the Casselman River Valley, with natural history and historical collections from the 18th century to the 1980s representing northern Garrett County, Maryland, and southern Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Homelife exhibits include kitchen, bedroom, sitting room, scullery, pottery and pastimes displays with some hands-on activities. The Folk Addition holds farm equipment, a Conestoga wagon and coal mining tools, and upstairs collections cover church, store, school, art, toys and clothing. A textile building displays spinning wheels and looms, and virtual tours are available.

The museum archives hold about 40 linear feet of original photographs and documents on Casselman Valley families and businesses, with a sampling published on PA Power Library through a partnership with Meyersdale Public Library. The society also rents its Folk Meeting House and offers winter boat storage.
