About
Spruce Forest Artisan Village is a community of artists and volunteers at 177 Casselman Road in Grantsville, set up to preserve and celebrate the tradition of handmade art in Garrett County. Resident artisans create and sell their work on site, so you can watch them in their studios and take home a piece made right there, in the heart of the Grantsville Arts & Entertainment District.
Artisans at Work
The village has grown from a few cabins to some 12 log and frame buildings of early vintage, two of which date to the Revolutionary War period, and most of them serve as studio space. Six resident artists and many visiting artists share their stories, technical advice and creative processes with visitors. Work made here has included bird carving, basket making, hand-loom weaving, hand-thrown pottery, stained glass, hand-forged iron, handcrafted teddy bears and natural soaps.
History at Little Crossings
The village sits in the area once known as Little Crossings and fronts the historic National Road. It was founded by Alta Schrock, who also founded Penn Alps, and it is part of the extended Penn Alps campus. Nearby are Stanton's Mill, built in 1797 and restored to operate much as it did in the 1800s, and the historic Casselman Bridge. Compton's One-Room School House and the Miller House have volunteer hosts in summer, and school groups and bus tours often visit.
Programs and Events
The village runs summer camps for children with artisan visits, art projects and guest speakers, and holds special events such as Christmas in the Village.
