About

St. Mark's Lutheran Church is an ELCA Lutheran congregation at 6 S 2nd St in downtown Oakland, part of the West Virginia–Western Maryland Synod. Founded in 1850, it celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2025 and welcomes everyone to Sunday worship and Holy Communion.

Worship and Music

Music is central to Sunday mornings here. The St. Mark's Choir and Hand Bell Choir both take part in worship, led by music directors Debi and Sean Beachy, who also lead the Garrett Choral Society. Guest musicians often join the service, especially in summer, and the church hosts community concerts. Both choirs welcome new members. The congregation is led by Pastor Carrie.

Learning Together

  • Sunday school for children from age 2 through 12th grade during the school year, with a Rally Sunday, a Christmas pageant, carolling and cards for shut-ins
  • Adult Forum, held in the church's lower level on a wide range of topics, where drop-in visitors are welcome

Reaching Out

St. Mark's members put their faith to work locally and abroad:

  • Bikes for the World: an annual spring collection of donated bicycles, which volunteers prepare for overseas shipping (the 2025 drive gathered more than 58 bikes)
  • Shawl Project: knitters and crocheters make prayer shawls, baby blankets and lap robes for hospitals and nursing homes
  • Christian Crossing Thrift Shop: members volunteer at the Oakland thrift shop, which also gives goods to people in critical need referred by social service agencies

The lower-level hall hosts meals and fellowship after special services. Stop in on a Sunday and you'll find a downtown church with deep local roots.
