About
St. Paul's United Methodist Church is a United Methodist congregation at 318 E Oak St in Oakland, describing itself as a fellowship of believers seeking to love God and neighbour. It serves Oakland and the wider Deep Creek Lake area, with gatherings through the week as well as on Sundays.
Roots Back to 1824
Methodism in Oakland traces to 1824, when Isaac and Ann McCarty opened the area's first Methodist preaching house on their farm, followed in 1829 by its first Sunday school. A church built in 1891 was named St. Paul's by Ralph Thayer, then its oldest living member. The present sanctuary was completed in 1935, with a hand-carved wood reredos behind the altar inscribed "Thou Shalt Be His Witness Unto All" (Acts 22:15). Its custom pipe organ, built by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio, has 21 ranks and 1,283 pipes, from about ten feet long down to pencil size.
Worship You Can Join From Home
Sunday worship is held in the sanctuary and streamed live on Facebook, and the late service is broadcast on local radio, WKTZ 95.9 FM and WMSG 1050 AM. Recorded services are posted on the church website, which is useful if you're travelling or homebound.
