About
The Children's League is a Cumberland-based nonprofit that has served children with special needs since its first clinics in 1926. It provides orthopedic, cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate, speech therapy and physical therapy services for children from birth to age 21 from Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Clinics and Therapy
Pediatric orthopedic surgeons from Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Baltimore area hold several orthopedic and cerebral palsy clinics during the year, and physical therapy is offered to clinic patients when a physician recommends it. The League manages the Cumberland Cleft Clinic, where a team of ten local physicians and specialists led by plastic surgeon Dr. Rob Carpenter holds orofacial clinics twice a year. It also operates the Scottish Rite Early Childhood Language Disorders Clinic, which evaluates and treats speech and language disorders in children.
Nearly a Century of Service
Dr. George Bennett of Baltimore organized the first clinic in Lonaconing in 1926 at the request of Mrs. Ann Sloan, and the League was incorporated in 1934 as The League for Crippled Children, founded by Henrietta Schwartzenbach and Elizabeth McLaughlin. More than 40,000 children have been served since. The League runs on donations, fundraising, memorials and bequests, receives no state or federal funds, and is governed by a volunteer board. Its offices are in the Willowbrook Office Complex on Willowbrook Road in Cumberland.
