About
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meets at its meetinghouse at 1022 John Dr in Mountain Lake Park, just outside Oakland. It serves Latter-day Saint families in southern Garrett County and welcomes visitors who are curious about the church or simply looking for a place to worship on Sunday.
What a Sunday Looks Like
Sunday services follow a two-hour format. The main meeting for everyone is sacrament meeting, which includes hymns, prayers, short talks given by members of the congregation, and the sacrament (Communion). After that, people split into classes by age group or interest, with something for children from 18 months and up as well as for adults. Classes are built around a lesson and discussion from a different section of scripture each week.
Tips for First-Time Visitors
- Join in as much or as little as you like. Taking the sacrament or answering questions in class is optional, and you're welcome to simply sit and listen.
- Dress as you're comfortable. Many members wear "Sunday best" such as button-down shirts, ties, slacks, skirts or dresses, but the church leaves it to you.
- You don't have to come alone. The church's local page lets you request that local missionaries meet you and sit with you.
Outside Sunday, the meetinghouse can be visited by appointment, so call ahead if you'd like to stop by during the week.
