About

The Colonial is a small plaque on a historic house at 113 G Street in Mountain Lake Park, noting that the home is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mountain Lake Park Historic District. It is a quick stop for anyone walking the town's Victorian-era streets.

The House and Its Plaque

The plaque, dated 1903, records the National Register listing by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Historical Marker Database describes the house as a two-and-a-half-story Colonial Revival frame home with a wrap-around porch on plain Doric columns and a stained glass front door, plus a newer round one-story wing with a conical roof.

Part of a Chautauqua Resort

Mountain Lake Park was founded in 1881 as a summer resort and became a center of the Chautauqua movement in Maryland, and its historic district was listed on the National Register in 1983. The Colonial stands on G Street (Route 825) south of Cedar Street, and the Julia Walker Ruhl marker is close by. Farther north on G Street, around 301 G Street, a cluster of markers covers the Victorian Chautauqua, the Amphitheater, the Assembly Hall and the Flag Monument.

The Colonial is a private home, so view the house and plaque from the street and continue your walk through the district.
