The Grist Mill

The Grist Mill is a one-room tiny cabin for up to two guests on a farm outside Oakland, built to look like an old-fashioned grist mill, complete with a working water wheel and a covered porch. It suits a couple or a solo traveller who wants a quiet farmland base for the state parks and waterfalls of western Garrett County and nearby West Virginia.

Inside the Cabin

The single room holds a full-size bed, a recliner, a smart TV with streaming apps and a small table with two chairs that works for meals or a laptop. Mini-split heating and air conditioning, a ceiling fan and fast Wi-Fi keep it comfortable year-round, and there's a private shower bath stocked with towels, a hair dryer and toiletries.

The kitchenette covers simple meals rather than full cooking:

• Two-burner cooktop, microwave and a mini fridge with freezer
• Keurig with coffee and creamer, plus basic cookware and utensils
• No full-size oven or refrigerator

Outdoors on the Farm

The covered porch has two chairs and mountain views, and the open farmland makes for good stargazing. A seasonal fire pit is available on request, with firewood, camping chairs and roasting sticks supplied. The hosts list downtown Oakland at about 4.6 miles, Herrington Manor State Park at about 7 miles, Swallow Falls State Park at about 10 miles and Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resort at about 12 miles.

Good to Know

• Sleeps two only, with no room for a cot, air mattress or pack-and-play
• No pets, because the hosts' two friendly beagles live on the property
• Eight exterior steps with a handrail and a gravel walkway, so it may not suit guests with limited mobility
• One parking space beside the cabin on a shared driveway
