About
The James Isaac House is a faith-based pregnancy resource center that offers free support to people who are pregnant, unsure about a pregnancy, or caring for a new baby. Its Oakland center is at 314 South Second Street, and it serves families across Garrett County and neighboring West Virginia from five centers.
Services for Parents
All services are offered at no charge. They include:
- Material assistance: baby clothes, formula and diapers, with larger items such as furniture available through its Learn To Earn program
- Prenatal classes to prepare for the birth
- Parenting classes for caring for a new child
- Advocate mentorship, pairing parents with a one-on-one advocate
- Abortion after care support
The website also has information pages on parenting, adoption and abortion. The center states that it does not perform or refer for abortions, so it is a support and education center rather than a medical clinic.
A Ministry That Started in Mountain Lake Park
The organization grew out of a local Right-to-Life group that founder Nellie Ashby and her husband joined in 1988. Its first center, Mountain Top Crisis Pregnancy Center, opened in Mountain Lake Park on July 8, 1989, followed by centers in Keyser, Kingwood and Petersburg, West Virginia. In 2016 it took the name The James Isaac House, after the son Nellie lost to abortion, and in August 2025 it opened a Grantsville center at 3231 Chestnut Ridge Road. Today it serves clients from nine counties.
