The Pilates Clinic is a McHenry Pilates studio owned by Carolyn Sheaffer, RN, MSN, a retired family nurse practitioner and certified Pilates instructor. It's at 23789 Garrett Hwy, behind UPMC Urgent Care in the same building, and it focuses on small, personal sessions for everyone from beginners and golfers to seniors and people recovering from injury.
Sessions Built Around You
Classes are private, duo or trio rather than large groups, so instruction can be adjusted to your body and goals. New and returning students start with an Introduction to Pilates, with two private sessions recommended before moving into duo work. The menu includes:
- Mat + Reformer, Levels 1/2 and 2/3
- Apparatus work on the reformer, tower, chair and ladder barrel
- Mat + TRX suspension training
- Pilates for golfers, focused on core, shoulder and hip stability and spinal flexibility for your swing
- Pilates for sports conditioning and Pilates for seniors
- Pilates for back pain and Pilates for rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injury or surgery (medical clearance required)
A Nurse's Approach to Pilates
Carolyn has taught Pilates since 2013 and is certified through Balanced Body University; she also teaches TRX. Her nursing background shapes the clinic's emphasis on gentle, progressive work for back pain, rehabilitation and older adults, which is useful if you've been told to strengthen your core but aren't sure where to start safely.
