About

The Reading Station is a nonprofit literacy program in downtown Oakland that has offered free one-on-one reading, writing and language tutoring to children and adults in Garrett County. It was founded in August 2017 by retired Maryland public school English teacher Sue Lisantti and has worked from offices above the Garrett County Historical Museum on 105 South Second Street.

How the Tutoring Works

Students meet one-on-one with a tutor, many of them retired educators, for weekly sessions. The program uses multi-sensory, phonics-based methods, including Orton-Gillingham and Phono-Graphix, which are designed for learners who need a different approach to reading, including students with dyslexia. It has welcomed learners of all ages, and tutoring is free, supported by grants and donations.

A Program With Local Roots

The Reading Station grew out of one teacher's belief that some children simply learn differently and need one-on-one time a classroom can't always give. In 2019 it received national recognition and a prize award through a student volunteer effort, and it has also hosted a book club for graduates of the program.

If you or someone in your family is struggling with reading, give The Reading Station a call to ask about current openings.
