About
Thousand Acres Golf Club is an 18-hole championship golf course at 500 Lakeside Club Dr. in Swanton, set in the Thousand Acres community near Deep Creek Lake with views of the Appalachian Mountains. It is open to public tee times as well as members, and it works for anyone from a visiting foursome to a local playing through the season.
The Course
Architect Craig Schreiner, ASGCA, designed the par-72 layout, with course shaper and designer Bob Holcomb also credited on the club's site. It plays to 7,211 yards from the back tees, and multiple tee sets bring it down to a comfortable length for newer players, so a mixed group can play the same round. Bunkers and water features shape the layout. The property includes a large area of wetlands, conservation easements protect green space in each phase of the surrounding community, and the course itself is deeded as permanent green space. Local excavating firm Lakefront Enterprises built the course.
Practice, Lessons and Groups
There is a practice range and a putting and short-game area for warming up, and golf instruction is available through the golf shop. The staff includes Director of Golf Operations Craig Yutzy, a PGA Class A member, and golf pro Scott Gonder. The club organizes group golf getaways with a group concierge, and larger outings and tournaments are coordinated through the Director of Golf. Seasonal memberships and season passes are offered for regulars.
Before You Go
Groups of fewer than four may be paired with other players, and single golfers book by calling the golf shop. Carts come with GPS, rental clubs are available, and the dress code asks for collared shirts, with no denim or sweatpants. Under Maryland law, outside alcohol and personal coolers are not allowed. Course hours depend on the weather, especially in the shoulder seasons and winter, so it is worth calling ahead.
Give the golf shop a ring to check conditions and lock in a tee time before you drive out.
