Trout's House Seafood

Trout's House Seafood is a seafood market and carryout at 2437 Deep Creek Drive in McHenry. It brings seafood from Maryland's Eastern Shore to Deep Creek Lake. John and Megan Trout own and run it, and it's where lake-house guests and locals pick up crabs, fish and shellfish for a crab feast at home.

A Family Seafood Tradition

John grew up working the seafood counter at his grandfather's store, Trout's Market in Woodsboro, Maryland. Later, while making deliveries for an uncle in the wholesale seafood business, he saw that Western Maryland needed a fresh seafood source and opened the McHenry shop. Crabs are steamed on site with a seasoning blend John's grandfather created in the 1980s. You can ask for your seafood steamed seasoned or plain. The shop is part of the Maryland Crab & Oyster Trail.

What's in the Case

• Live or steamed blue crabs by the dozen, half bushel or bushel
• Soft shell crabs, snow crab legs and jumbo crab legs
• Fresh fish such as salmon, tuna, trout and sea bass
• Shrimp, clams, oysters and mussels
• Premade crab cakes, plus house-made crab dip and Buffalo dip
• Frozen lobster and bagged shrimp
• Breadings, batters, sauces, marinades and Old Bay
• Feast supplies such as mallets, oyster knives, skewers and brown paper for the table

The owners have said they can tell you exactly where each product came from. John is also glad to share cooking tips and recipes.

Ordering Ahead

Call ahead with what you need and pick it up when it's ready. Specific fish can be special-ordered with a few days' notice, and the shop takes large orders for dinners, parties and holidays. The schedule is shorter in winter, but large special orders are still available.

If you're planning a crab night at the lake, call a day or two ahead so your order is waiting when you arrive.
