A New Deal Post Office With a Mural Inside
The building was completed in 1940 by the Federal Works Agency, one of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal agencies, and its cornerstone still records that origin. Inside the lobby hangs "Buckwheat Harvest," a 1942 tempera-on-canvas mural by Robert Franklin Gates, commissioned through the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. It shows men and women bringing in buckwheat, a crop long grown in western Maryland, and it is worth a look while you wait in line.
