Western Trails

Western Trails is a family-run riding stable at 4009 Mayhew Inn Rd in Oakland, in the middle of the Deep Creek Lake area. It has offered trail rides since 1970, and today it serves first-time riders, families with young children and experienced riders alike.

Trail Rides and More

The signature outing is a guided trail ride of about four miles that takes roughly an hour, crossing open fields and climbing through wooded mountainside past an old apple orchard, with views toward the lake. You may spot wildlife along the way. Beyond trail rides, the stable offers:

• Hand-led pony rides for younger children
• Hayrides
• Riding lessons
• Off-road side-by-side tours

Because the menu runs from a short pony ride to a lesson or a longer trail outing, it works well when your group mixes ages and experience levels.

A Family Stable Since 1970

Western Trails began on a family farm with a dairy barn. The family, now into its third generation running the business, has added horse breeding, training, lessons and pony rides over the years. The stable operates year-round, weather permitting, and reservations are recommended, especially outside the busy summer season.
