About
Widmyer Driving School is a Maryland driving school, licensed by the Motor Vehicle Administration, that teaches driver education and Driver Improvement classes in counties across the state. In Garrett County it partners with Garrett College's Continuing Education program, so local classes meet at the college's campus on Mosser Road in McHenry.
Driver Education for New Drivers
The Maryland Driver Education course fulfills the state's requirement for new drivers. It combines 30 hours of classroom instruction with 6 hours behind the wheel, and Widmyer notes that it meets MVA requirements. Garrett College has offered the course in partnership with Widmyer for years, with sessions at the McHenry campus and, in past years, at the college's Southern Outreach Center in Oakland.
Driver Improvement
The Driver Improvement program is for drivers who have been referred by a court or the MVA, provisional-license holders with a moving violation, drivers with a suspended or revoked license, and anyone who wants to complete it before a traffic court date. Adults can take it online through Widmyer or in person at Garrett College; drivers under 18 must take it at Garrett College.
Signing Up
Registration goes through Widmyer by phone or on its website, and Garrett College's non-credit catalog lists upcoming local sessions, so it's worth checking both before you plan around a class.
