About

Wild Ember Bread is a small craft bakery in unit 5 of The Market at 42 shopping center, 2150 Friendsville Rd #5, Friendsville, MD 21531, next to Railey Design & Furniture. It bakes organic sourdough breads, bagels and pastries on site, with a rotating menu, and you can watch and smell the bread being made.

Organic, Naturally Leavened Bread

The bakery uses all-organic flour, sourced largely from Deep Roots Milling in Virginia, and regionally grown heritage wheat varieties when possible. Most of its hearth loaves are naturally leavened and whole grain. Deep Creek Sourdough, baguettes and bagels are offered every open day, joined by rotating loaves such as pain de mie, landbrot, seeded spelt and chocolate fig, plus seasonal focaccia, sprouted-grain breads and holiday specials. Frozen loaves and certified gluten-free baguettes from Gifted Breads are kept in the freezer.

From Farmers Market to Storefront

Head baker Omar Qazi previously baked for Amy's Bread in New York City and A Baked Joint in Washington, DC. He launched Wild Ember Bread at the Deep Creek Farmers Market in 2022, baking in a custom mobile wood-fired oven built by Hearth+Timber, and opened the Friendsville shop in spring 2024. Beyond bread, the shop stocks natural wines and pantry goods such as specialty chocolates, whole-grain pastas, sauces, olive oils, honey and jams. The bakery also takes wholesale and special-event inquiries.
