Wilderness Voyageurs runs its Upper Youghiogheny and Savage River rafting trips from an outfitter store in Friendsville, along the banks of the Youghiogheny just off Interstate 68. The company's main adventure center is in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania, and Upper Yough guests check in at the Friendsville store, not in Ohiopyle.
Upper Yough Rafting
The Upper Yough is Maryland's only Class IV–V whitewater rafting, an 11-mile run that drops through Gap Falls, Bastard Falls, National Falls and Heinzerling Falls. Trips run on dam release dates from April through October, with only three guests plus a guide in each raft, and guides need at least five years of rafting experience before they lead the Upper Yough.
The day starts at the Friendsville store, where guests get their gear and a safety briefing before heading to the put-in, and trips finish at the Wilderness Voyageurs Upper Youghiogheny Outpost in Friendsville. Previous Class III–IV experience is highly recommended, and participants should be strong swimmers able to pull their own weight in the raft.
