About
Wisp Resort is the four-season mountain resort on Marsh Mountain at 296 Marsh Hill Road in McHenry, overlooking Deep Creek Lake. It is where you go for downhill skiing and snowboarding in Garrett County, plus lodging, golf and year-round outdoor activities. Its coaster, ropes courses, mini golf and other Mountain Park activities have their own listing, Wisp Resort Mountain Adventures, at the same address.
Skiing and Snow Sports
Wisp has 33 slopes on 132 acres of ski terrain, and more than 90 percent of it is lit for night skiing. Beginners can start with lessons, rentals and Wisp's free learn-to-ski and learn-to-snowboard programs, while a terrain park serves more experienced riders. Off the slopes, the Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park opened in 2001, and the Nordic center offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile tours.
Golf, Lodging and Warm-Weather Fun
When the snow melts, the resort has 36 holes of golf: Lodestone Golf Club, an 18-hole course designed by Hale Irwin, and Fantasy Valley Golf Course at the base of the mountain. The Lodge at Wisp offers slopeside rooms along with meeting and conference space for weddings, retreats, reunions and conventions. Lake days on Deep Creek Lake, escape games, whitewater rafting and scenic chairlift rides round out the summer and fall options.
Seventy Seasons on Marsh Mountain
Wisp began in the winter of 1955–56, when Helmuth "Ace" Heise started skiing on Marsh Mountain with a rope tow and a pickup truck bed serving as the first rental shop. DC Development bought the resort from Heise in 2001, and Park City-based Pacific Group Resorts purchased it in December 2012. A North Camp expansion in 2005 added 10 trails, two quad chairlifts and 126 snowmaking guns.
Check the resort's website for current conditions and lodging packages before you plan your trip.
