About
Wolf Den Run State Park covers about 2,039 acres in three parcels along the North Branch of the Potomac River south of Oakland, with its headquarters and campground at 1699 Upperman Rd, Oakland, MD 21550. It has an extensive network of off-road vehicle trails and also welcomes hikers, mountain bikers, trout anglers and hunters.
Riding Areas and Permits
Designated motorized routes total more than 50 miles across three areas: Huckleberry Rocks (12.5 miles, including a main loop of about four miles and 6.5 miles open to full-size vehicles), North Hill and the Potomac River Area, home to Trail 2103, Maryland's first Jeep Badge of Honor Trail. ATVs, side-by-sides and motorcycles are welcome. Motorized riding needs a reservation, and every vehicle needs a DNR ORV sticker or Maryland MVA registration; riding in the North Hill and Potomac River areas also needs a county permit. Helmets are required for all riders, riders under 16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian, and alcohol is prohibited. The areas do not connect directly, and trailers cannot be parked at North Hill. Snowmobiles may use the Huckleberry Rocks loop when snow allows, with a state snowmobile decal.
Hiking, Fishing and Hunting
Hiking and biking trails run through all three areas, and pets must be leashed. The park protects cold-water trout streams including Short Run and Wolf Den Run, plus about three miles of North Branch frontage with riverside picnic sites. Fisherman's Camp Foot Trail gives hikers access to Lost Land Run in Potomac State Forest (see the Lostland Run Trailhead listing). The park is open to hunting; motorized use closes during the two-week deer firearms season.
Old Mining Land, New Trails
All three parcels were once mined for coal, and you can still see bench-cut terrain. Rocky bluffs rise about 900 feet above the river, and the Huckleberry Rocks area protects sensitive wetlands.
Book your ride ahead and check DNR for any weather closures.
